The makers

How these were checked

Whose words. Each quote is the maker’s tasting notes or, where marked, its product description, copied from its own product page or a maker-supplied wrapper image. We add no scores of our own. The wheel’s words are the ones those quotes and the bars’ names use; every underlined word in a quote is one the wheel matched, so you can see why each bar is there. General words such as “fruity” or “ripe fruit” name no particular fruit, so the wheel doesn’t sort them into a family.

Prices. Bar and disc prices from 21 makers’ shop feeds were re-checked on 5 October 2026. Other prices were checked on 1 October 2026. Prices are in the shop’s currency, before shipping and tax. Hu’s single-bar prices are a retailer’s, checked on 1 October 2026.

On sale now. Maker stock was re-checked on 5 October 2026, from the shop’s available size or a working buy button. Hu’s retailer listings keep their 1 October 2026 check. Stock changes, and some makers don’t ship to every country.

Bean-to-bar. Marked only where the maker’s own pages show it makes chocolate from the bean. Chocolatiers who work from couverture made by others say so, or don’t say.

Tasting notes are a map, not a promise

A maker’s notes tell you what they taste in their own bar: the fruit of the bean, the roast, the sugar. Your notes may differ, and that’s the point of tasting. The quickest way to learn what you like is to taste two or three bars side by side, from the lightest to the darkest, and write down what you find before you read the wrapper.

To see where the beans come from, try the Origin Atlas. To make a bar of your own, start in the Chocolate Lab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the tasting notes come from?
From the makers themselves. Each quote comes from the maker’s own product page, shop feed or wrapper image, checked between 1 and 5 October 2026. Where a maker gives a description instead of tasting notes, the card says so. The Tasting Room adds no scores of its own.
How does the flavour wheel work?
The inner ring holds thirteen flavour families; the outer ring holds the words makers actually use for them, such as “cherry”, “honey” or “hazelnut”, as many of the most-used ones as fit, from words at least three bars on sale use. Rarer words are still found through their family or the search box. Pick a family for every bar whose maker names any of its words, or a single word to narrow it down. Pick up to three to find bars that mention all of them. Every matching word is underlined in the maker’s quote, so you can see why a bar is there.
Why can’t I see every bar a maker sells?
By default the list shows bars that had a working buy button on the maker’s site on the day we checked. Untick “On sale now” to see sold-out and unavailable bars too. Bars whose makers give no tasting notes are listed after the rest, and boxes and bonbons are on each maker’s own page. Ranges change, so the maker’s own page is always the final word.
How do I run a tasting flight?
Add two to four bars with “Add to flight”, or let “Suggest a flight of four” pick bars from different makers that run from light to dark. Then open the tasting sheet and print it. Taste from the lightest to the darkest, let each square melt on your tongue before you chew, and sip water between bars. The sheet puts each maker’s words beside space for your own: snap, aroma, melt, taste and finish.
Are the prices current?
Bar and disc prices from 21 makers’ shop feeds were re-checked on 5 October 2026. Other prices were checked on 1 October 2026. Prices are in the shop’s currency, before shipping and tax. Hu’s single-bar prices are a retailer’s, checked on 1 October 2026. Some makers don’t ship to every country.
